The Bryant Homestead was built in 1785 and was enlarged by William Cullen Bryant in the mid 1800’s when he made it his summer home. The Homestead overflows with family furnishings and memorabilia of Bryant’s life as a poet, traveler and editor of the New York Evening Post.

William Cullen Bryant was born in Cummington in 1794. He started out as a lawyer, but then worked as a talented poet, and also joined the New York Evening Post. Bryant was a leader of the anti-slavery Free-Soil movement within the Democratic Party. He ended up being one of the founders of the Republican Party. He was also an early political backer of Abraham Lincoln.

Until Labor Day, The Homestead is open from 1 to 5pm on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Monday holidays. From Labor Day to Columbus Day, it’s also open from 1 to 5 on weekends and Monday holidays.
