Get ready to learn about small town agriculture
and industry! The Bisbee Mill Museum is a restored shop and grist mill,
built in the early 1800’s, with additions built in the early and mid-1900’s.
Tools, industrial equipment, and machinery are all on display--clearly
showing what life was like when Chesterfield was settled. A partial
list of some of the items that were manufactured here includes:
broom handles, wagons and buggies, coffins, and whip boxes.
The museum’s grist mill is currently
being restored to an operating state. The project
has been called the most unique historical preservation project currently
ongoing in Western Massachusetts. Museum officials recently sent
in the paperwork required to be listed on the National Register of Historic
Places.
The museum is open from June to October,
on Sundays from 2pm to 5pm. You can set up an appointment to visit
the museum or learn about special events, by calling (413)296-4750.
Your final stop on the North tour is
another museum, the William Cullen Bryant Homestead in Cummington.
Take Route 143 West to Route 112 North, at the 5-way intersection in Cummington
take a left onto Bryant Road where you’ll find the homestead.
